    Common Issues

    Recognise Any of These?

These are the most common solar panel problems we deal with. If any of these sound familiar, get in touch for a free assessment.

    Most Common

    Inverter Failure

Error codes on the display, a blank screen, unusual noises, or the unit running hot. The inverter is the component most likely to develop a fault. Our engineers carry specialist diagnostic equipment to pinpoint whether the issue lies in the inverter itself or elsewhere in the system.

    📉
    Very Common

    Reduced Generation

Higher electricity bills or lower meter readings compared to the same period last year? Causes range from dirty panels and shading to degraded wiring or a failing inverter. We compare your actual output against the expected performance for your system to find exactly where generation is being lost.

    🐦
    Common

    Pest Damage

Pigeons and squirrels like nesting under panels — and they chew through cabling. Warning signs include DC or isolation fault codes, or the system failing after rain. We repair the damage and can advise on anti-bird mesh installation to prevent future problems.

    🌪
    Seasonal

    Storm Damage

High winds can shift panels, damage mounting hardware, or send debris into your array. If you’ve had severe weather and suspect damage, we’ll inspect the full system. Where insurance is involved, we provide detailed written reports and photographs to support your claim.

    ⚠️
    Safety Issue

    Earth Faults & Isolation Errors

These faults typically point to a problem with DC wiring or connectors — often caused by moisture ingress or physical damage. The inverter shuts down as a safety measure. Our engineers trace the fault through the system and carry out the necessary repairs to restore safe operation.

    🏠
    Planned Works

    Panel Removal for Roof Works

Leaking roof? Planning a re-tile, extension, or loft conversion? We decommission and safely remove your panels, store them on site, and reinstall them once the building work is complete. We work with both Solar PV and Solar Thermal systems on flat, tiled and metal roofs.

    DIY Checks

7 Simple Checks You Can Do Yourself

Before calling us, try these straightforward checks from ground level. Many issues can be spotted — and sometimes resolved — without a visit.

    1

    Monitor Your Generation Meter

The red LED should flash during daylight — faster means more electricity being generated. Check monthly and compare against the same period last year. A significant drop is worth investigating.

    2

    Check Your Inverter Display

Your inverter should show normal operation during daylight hours. Error codes, warning lights, or a blank display all indicate potential problems. Note down any codes before calling us — it helps our engineers prepare and often speeds up diagnosis.

    3

    Inspect Panels from the Ground

Look for cracked glass, heavy soiling, or panels that look out of position. Never climb onto your roof — leave that to qualified engineers with the right safety equipment. Ground-level inspection is enough to spot most visible issues.

    4

    Check Your Consumer Unit

If the system has stopped generating, check whether the solar circuit breaker in your fuse box has tripped. Reset the switch — if generation resumes, great. If it trips again, you have a fault that needs professional diagnosis.

    5

    Watch for Tree Growth

Overhanging branches can shade your panels and reduce output. Because most domestic systems are wired in series, shading just one panel affects the entire string. Keep vegetation trimmed to maintain clear sunlight throughout the day.

    6

    Look for Pigeon Activity

Nesting material, droppings, or the sound of birds around your roof are warning signs. If you’re also seeing fault codes or the system has stopped working, call us first — there may be wiring damage that needs repairing before any mesh can be fitted.

    7

    Keep Panels Reasonably Clean

Most panels are largely self-cleaning, but those installed at a shallow pitch gather dirt faster. A local window cleaner using clean water and a soft brush works well. Avoid abrasive materials, and never clean panels that are cracked or visibly damaged.

    Questions & Answers

    Frequently Asked Questions

Our most commonly asked questions about solar panel maintenance and repair. Can’t find your answer? Call us on 01932 784848 — we’re happy to help.

For domestic Solar PV systems, MCS guidelines recommend a professional inspection every 10 years for owner-occupied properties, or every 5 years for rental properties. Solar Thermal (hot water) systems need servicing every four years, which includes an antifreeze replacement. Commercial systems of all types should be inspected annually. Don’t wait for a scheduled service if you notice any problems — contact us straight away.
Solar panels themselves have no moving parts and require very little attention. However, your overall system includes an inverter, wiring, connectors, and mounting hardware that all benefit from periodic inspection. The inverter is the most common component to fail, typically lasting 10–15 years. Regular maintenance also protects your warranty, satisfies your insurance requirements, and helps ensure maximum energy generation throughout the system’s life.
First, check your consumer unit to see if the solar circuit breaker has tripped. If resetting it doesn’t help, note down the error code and call us on 01932 784848. Error codes help our engineers prepare and often indicate whether the problem is in the inverter or elsewhere in the system. Many error codes can be diagnosed over the phone without the need for a callout.
We work with all major inverter brands including Solis, SMA, Fronius, Growatt, ABB, Aurora, SolarEdge, Solax, Chint, Kaco, Mastervolt, Steca, Eversola, Afore, and Goodwee. We service solar panels regardless of brand or manufacturer. The only systems we are currently unable to work with are those using Enphase microinverters. If your brand isn’t listed, just get in touch — we may still be able to help.
For domestic properties we cover Surrey, Hampshire, Sussex, Berkshire, Kent (not all of Kent), Middlesex, and parts of South London (Richmond, Wimbledon, Putney, Croydon, Bromley). For larger commercial systems — offices, schools, apartment blocks, warehouses — we cover a significantly wider area including Greater London, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, and more. If you’re slightly outside our listed domestic area, please contact us anyway as we’re often in the locality.
No. Replacing your inverter will not affect your feed-in tariff, and you do not need to notify MCS or your energy supplier. If your generation meter is also replaced, you will need to inform your energy supplier and provide photographs of both the old and new meter, showing their serial numbers.
Yes — every new solar customer receives a free telephone or email assessment. We’ll ask a few questions about your system and the symptoms you’ve noticed. For Solar PV, we can often diagnose the fault and give advice that lets you resolve the issue yourself at no cost. We will only recommend a paid engineer visit when it is genuinely necessary.
We are open Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:30pm. You can also submit an enquiry through the contact form on this page at any time and we will get back to you on the next working day.
